This dual role, both historic and administrative, makes it unique in France, where modern decisions are made within walls that have witnessed nearly a thousand years of history.
The building you see today is the result of a long and rich evolution. The history of the Château des Ducs de Savoie began in the 11th century, during the Middle Ages, as a simple fortress. In 1295, Count Amadeus V acquired it and launched major works to make it the seat of power of the House of Savoy, a dynasty of dukes who ruled the region for nearly nine centuries. The dukes’ castle then became the political and administrative heart of their States, with every hall and chamber designed for power.
The 15th century marked a peak under the reign of Amadeus VIII, the first Duke of Savoy. He built a sumptuous princely chapel, which became renowned across Europe. From 1502 to 1578, this chapel, later known as the Sainte-Chapelle, housed one of the most famous relics: the Shroud of Turin. This episode gave the Château de Chambéry international prestige.
The château’s destiny was turbulent, with every tower and chamber telling a story. Ravaged by fires, it was always rebuilt, each time adding new architectural layers. After the ducal capital was moved to Turin in 1563, the château retained an important administrative role, confirmed after Savoy’s annexation to France in 1860.
Access to the oldest parts of the Château de Chambéry is only possible through guided tours. The guided tour of the Château des Ducs de Savoie is a privilege, opening doors usually closed to the public. The route reveals a layering of styles, each reflecting a different era.
The Sainte-Chapelle: a jewel of flamboyant Gothic style, featuring 16th-century stained glass and trompe-l'œil paintings.
The Historic Towers: the Yolande Tower and its 70-bell carillon, one of the largest in Europe, animate the city. You will also discover the massive Archives Tower, anchoring the château in its fortress past.
The Courtyard & Medieval Halls: the main courtyard has hosted major events. The tour also grants access to medieval halls such as the former Chamber of Accounts, where the duchy’s history comes to life. The architecture of the Château des Ducs de Savoie is a stone book that reveals its story step by step.
Far from being a static museum, the Château des Ducs de Savoie is a vibrant cultural hub. The events at the Château punctuate the year and attract many visitors, contributing to local tourism.
